Update from Farrgo II
“We are withdrawing due to mast damage. Everyone is ok and we are motoring back to Westhaven.”
25/11/12 @ 0730 hours
Update from Expedition Coppelia:
“Currently close to Motutapu. No 2, full main, a little under powered but OK. Well I spoke to soon about the dry! shortly after my last update at 2 am we hit 25 knots of westerly and an extremly wet sail change ! Once we changed to the 2, we had a very good look at the light wind area that was supposed to be close Colvile Channel, it was the meeting of the westerly on the east side of the the peninsular with the south west on the west side. This area near Channel Island has caused much distress to Rob and I in the past, Becalmings, low level jets, roaring tides, I am pretty sure Rob has nightmares about it anytime we race there. So we braced for a soul wrenching becalming, which started exactly where Predict Wind estimated. Calming soup and toast was made, and this time the tide came to our aid and swept us through the no wind zone. And we off round channnel island and on our way home!

Update from Expedition Coppelia
“Finally back in GSM coverage We have had a pretty dry last 24 hours. We made a decision to go offshore when we were amongst the Aldermans on the way out to White Island. We pushed to the east under full fraction kite before gybing back and gradually getting knocked down to the mark. The sailing conditions have been beautiful. White Island put on a great show of steam as we passed this morning. We exited White Island, and have been sailing under no. 1 and full main, waiting for the wind t disappear, but as yet it has not. Predict wind shows a large wind shadow off Colville and we are currently sailing low to be offshore when we get to it. All well on board. Rob is happy!”

23/11/12 @ 1650 hours
Update from Starlight Express
“Just rounded Chanel Island, first mono. Equilibrium about 200m astern. 10 knots of breeze, glamour sailing.”
23/11/12 @ 1645 hours
Update from Expedition Coppelia
“Still no monos round Channel Island. We have 7.5nm to go. Everyone is one the wind. Truxton is really close above us. Equilinnrium 3nm ahead on our line.”
23/11/12 @ 1430 hours
Update from Expedition Coppelia:
“Rob and I are currently sailing under code zero, True Wind Speed is 6 knots, boat speed 6.2 knots. Sun, clear skies, bacon sandwiches. Equalibrium is currently 1.1 nautical miles ahead just above our line, and Squealer and Truxton, both under zero are to leeward and slightly ahead, we have just gain 5 degrees of bearing on them in the last five minutes. In the distance towards Channel Island we can still see Vodafone clearly!”

Race Documents & Updates
About the Race
This Category 3+ race is conducted each year in November and takes the yachts from Auckland, down south to the Bay of Plenty, around White Island, and back to Auckland. At 320 nautical miles it isn’t a race for just anybody!
The Around White Island Race is perfect for those needing offshore racing experience or need a qualifying race for another series.
In 2011 the race had a different course and sent the fleet north rather than south. The reason being was due to the Rena wreck and the amount of debris still on the course area.
The next Around White Island Race is scheduled to start on Friday 23rd November.
