RAYC is home to a flourishing fleet of these brilliantly conceived racers. Best described as a cross between a sport boat, a day sailor and an adult racing dinghy, the Elliott 5.9 suits individual or syndicate ownership and is the perfect way to achieve low cost fleet racing with your mates.
The Elliott 5.9 was designed by Greg Elliott and was first released in 1983. Conceived as a club trainer cum match racer, the Elliott 5.9 boasts an efficient single spreader fractional rig, well balanced sail plan, and a performance hull that offers the response and manoeuvrability required for exciting dinghy-like performance with close fleet racing.
Although many of the boats are now 20+ years old, the racing scene has got stronger and stronger in the past couple of years due to several factors - close and exciting fleet racing, good value for money (used boats avail for $10 - 14,000), excellent social aspects of the fleet, suitability of boat for syndicate ownership - a crew of three and each has an important role to play in racing success.
New boats are now available again with Erotic launched in 2005. Contact the class association (via www.e59.org.nz) which has recently purchased the Elliott 5.9 class moulds.
The NZ racing scene is strong with regular club racing in several centres as well as the highly popular Appleton's Estate Rum Travellers Series. These regattas regularly attract fields of 15 to 20 boats. The racing format for these events and annual class Nationals is windward leewards. The always attract top sailors and the racing is hotly contested.
The Auckland fleet now comprises 8 boats and sails out of RAYC. The boats are stored on trailers with the mast up ready to go - no marina fees or antifouling!
