Eight (8) week courses are held in Term 1 & Term 4 of the school year
There are three levels in Optimists, Cadet, 420 and keelboat classes through which to progress as your confidence and knowledge of sailing increases.
Optimist classes for juniors who are complete beginners.
Pre-requisite: Competent swimmer
Certification: Yachting New Zealand Level 1
Classes include: Safety, Wind awareness, Basic Boat Care, Parts of the boat and sail, Knots, Swimming with a lifejacket, Capsize experience and righting an upturned boat, Launching and retrieving of a ramp or beach, Rigging, Tacking and gybing, Getting out of Irons, Upwind sailing and downwind sailing, Rules and definitions

Certification: RAYC Learn to Race
Extra: Club Racing on Sundays
Classes include: Getting around a course effectively, Starting, Starting tactics, General Tactics, Mark rounding, Advanced boat handling, Racing rules, Boat tuning
An introductory boat for two-person sailing. The boats come equiped with a small jib and kite, as well as a main sail.
Pre-requisite: Optimist Level 2
Certification: RAYC Cadet Course
Extras: Club Racing on Sunday's is an extra for those wishing to push themselves in this class of dinghy.
An advanced two-person dinghy, for those more experienced skippers and crew.
Pre-requisite: Optimist Level 3. A minimum combined weight of 110
Extras: Club Racing on a sunday, plus school, national and international regattas are the next steps for those wanting to push themselves.
These are courses designed for fun, adventure and a chance to trial different boats at the club.
